Competition

Is your ballerina interested in taking their technique and artistry to the next level? Are they ready to commit to furthering their dance training?

If your ballerina is ready to commit to furthering their dance technique and performance level, we are happy to consider them for our competition training program.  NEAD’s Competition Program is for serious ballet students.  Starting in 2018, the program takes 5-10 dancers each year who we think would benefit from this extra training. Dancers selected for the program will receive one on one coaching with NEAD staff and guest instructors in preparation for multiple ballet competitions from October-April.  Dancers will rehearse 2-3 times per week in addition to their technique classes and Nutcracker/Spring performance rehearsals. Dancers will perform 1-2 classical variations and possibly a contemporary solo depending on their level.  We also have an Ensemble Division where dancers will perform group pieces as well as duets/trios. Dancers ages 10-18 are invited to audition.

NEAD’s Competition Program focuses on each dancers’ training, their individual mastery and skill and growth as an artist.

NEAD’s Competition Program focuses on each dancers’ training, their individual mastery and skill and growth as an artist.

For the students that are willing and able to invest in individual competition training, there are many benefits including:

  • A boost in self-confidence. Performing at multiple competitions where there is added pressure compared to a regular performance instills a sense of pride in our dancers.
  • Refining Technique and Artistry. Working one on one with coaches helps the dancer really refine their technique on a personal level as well as work on artistry needed for a classical variation.
  • Builds Good Work Ethic. Many hours of training are required to master a variation for a competition so this builds student’s level of commitment and work ethic and provides them with a standard of progress to measure themselves against, so they evolve into more accomplished dancers.
  • More Confidence Performing. With the time spent training one on one, ballerinas get a better understanding of ballet technique, style, and performance ability.
  • The Excitement of Competition. Finally, the dance competition gives students a healthy understanding of winning and losing, as well as accepting critique, which carries over in their whole life. Not to mention the thrill and memories from competing with their peers.

In short, training for competition requires passion, dedication, and commitment, which helps dancers develop a healthy appreciation for the sacrifice needed to achieve important goals.

Auditions are held every June after our spring performance.  We will be sending information out regarding this in May.
